Find Your Voice and Use It

“Finding our voice and using it, especially in acts of critical rebellion and resistance, pushing past fear, continues to be one of the most powerful ways feminist thinking and practice changes life.”

Author, poet, and activist bell hooks challenges us to find power in our personal experiences and voices by composing and sharing our stories. Giving voice to our experiences allows us to break silences and open space for others to be empowered to do the same.

Our 2023 Somos Escritoras Summer Writing Workshop theme, “Talking Back,” draws on the writing and words of bell hooks. We invite Latina girls (entering 6-8 grade) to join our writing community to discover the powerful ways writing and art can serve as tools to define ourselves, document our history, tell our stories, advocate for change – and “talk back” to the world. Together, we develop our writing and step into our power as writers, as escritoras, bravely writing our lives and amplifying our voices.

Our 2023 Summer Writing Workshop will be hosted June 5-15, 2023, from 9-1:30 p.m. on the UT Austin Campus. Throughout the nine-day summer taller, we will learn from guest artists and writers, create art, compose personal writing, and develop different strategies to enhance our writing skills.
