Educating Our Present and Our Future

Somos Escritoras - Education Our Present & Future

“When you educate a woman, you educate a family.”

-Jovita Idár

Journalist, teacher, suffragist, and civil rights activist Jovita Idár is known for using her voice and writing to challenge the injustices faced by her community – including segregated schooling, women’s rights, racism, and violence. Jovita Idár was a champion for bilingual education and the right for children to learn about their history and traditions. Through her writing and advocacy, Jovita Idár created consciousness-raising and educational spaces for mujeres to step into their many roles as intelligent, active, engaged members of society, paving the way for the work we do today in Somos Escritoras.

We invite Latina girls (entering 6-8 grade) to join our writing community to discover the powerful ways writing and art can serve as tools to document our history, tell our stories, advocate for change, and educate ourselves and the world. Together, we develop our writing and step into our power as writers and escritoras, bravely writing our lives, sharing our perspectives,  and amplifying our voices.

Our 2024 Summer Writing Workshop will be hosted on the University of Texas at Austin Campus from June 3 -7, 2024, from 9 to 2:30 p.m. Throughout the five-day summer workshop, we will learn from guest artists and writers, create art, compose personal writing, and develop strategies to enhance our writing skills.

Somos Escritoras is open to Latina girls entering 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.
