Escritoras, Rise Up.

Escritoras, it has taken me a few days to find the words to speak to this moment, to offer comfort in these days of despair. Watching the election results come in early on Tuesday evening and then late into the night, my heart broke, and I reflected on the impact these results would have on our families and communities.

Escritoras, feel all your feelings – the pain, disbelief, heartbreak, fear, sadness... all of them. Feel your feelings and take all the time you need to care for yourself - mindbodyspirit.

Escritoras, although this moment and these days have felt heavy, I am reminded of the power and hope we can find in community. In community, we can regain strength and find healing. In community, we can share our fears, hopes, and dreams. In community, we can build coalitions to advocate for a world where we are all truly free.  

Escritoras, in Somos Escritoras, we work as a community to form a sisterhood where we can all thrive. Now is the time to build on the work that we do together each summer – engaging in critical dialogue, composing our stories, documenting our histories, and sharing our perspectives without apology. We come from a legacy and tradition of storytellers, poets, artists, musicians, and dancers who have used their art as a platform to raise consciousness, advocate for our futures, and amplify their voices. These traditions are in our blood – and hold the hope, joy, lucha, and love of generations.

Write. Create. Build. Resist. Rise Up.

They will not take away our stories, our histories, and our joy.
