What is Somos Escritoras Writing Workshop?

  • Somos Escritoras is a Writing Workshop for Latina girls to share and perform stories from their experiences using art, theater, and writing as a tool for self-reflection and self-examination.​

Who can apply?

​Girls are eligible to apply if they:

  • You are entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the upcoming school year.

  • You can attend all dates.

  • You have permission from a parent, guardian, or caretaker to apply.

  • Have a strong desire to attend our writing workshop

  • If you are selected, you must respond to our selection email to secure your spot.​

Who is considered?

To be considered for the writing workshop, all girls must:

  • Be fully invested in the workshop and strongly desire to participate in our workshop.

  • Must be available and committed to attend all program dates.

  • Girls who have permission from a parent/ guardian can apply and complete the application process.

Is Somos Escritoras free?

Somos Escritoras is:

  • Free to attend and apply

  • Valued at $400

  • Fully funded by grants and donations from the community - as a result all workshop dates are mandatory for selected applications​

What is a workshop like?

Participants learn about BIPOC history, artists, and authors through videos, presentations, and texts (e.g., poetry, short stories, essays) that examine topics related to gender, culture, language, family, and identity.​

 

Our workshops are facilitated in English and Spanish and include games, art, and drawing as writing tools, as well as presentations from guest authors, poets, artists, etc.

What if I am not a writer or a good writer?

  • We believe everyone is a writer and storyteller who can write when given a chance to tell stories that matter to them.

Who are the Writing Mentors?

  • Our workshops are facilitated by a team of Latina writing mentors:

  • classroom teachers, college students, and community artists

  • guest authors and presenters.​

  • Writing mentors support girls by writing and sharing alongside them.​

  • We strive to create a collaborative space to share bravely as chicas y mujeres. 

Where are you located?

  • We are located in Austin, Texas, where we led our workshops.

When do applications open?

  • Applications open in the Spring.

When and when are selected participants notified?

  • You (your daughter/ child) will be notified by email if you are selected.

  • Notifications will sent on TBA.

  • If selected, you will be provided with next steps.
