About

Somos Escritoras is a creative space that invites Latinx girls (grades 6-8) to share and perform stories from their lived experiences using art, theater, and writing as a tool for self-reflection and self-examination.

Our goal is to support Latinx girls in continuing to develop their many literacies while learning new tools to speak their truths, define themselves and amplify their voices within a supportive community of girls and women. 

Somos Escritoras es un espacio creativo que invita a las jóvenes Latinas (grados del 6 al 8) para compartir e interpretar las historias de sus experiencias de vida utilizando el arte, teatro y la escritura como una herramienta para la autorreflexión y el auto análisis.

Nuestra meta es apoyar a las chicas Latinas para que continúen desarrollando sus propias habilidades mientras aprenden nuevas herramientas para decir su verdad, definirse a sí mismas y amplificar sus voces dentro de una comunidad de apoyo de jóvenes y mujeres

Our Girls

Our chicas are storytellers, writers, artists, musicians, dreamers and so much more. They come to Somos Escritoras because of their desire to make a difference in the world and join in community with other girls from neighborhoods located throughout Austin and Phoenix who share the same vision of hope and love.

Our Mentors

Somos Escritoras is facilitated by a team of Latinx writing mentors. Our writing mentors are classroom teachers, undergraduate and graduate students from the local university, and community artists. All writing mentors support girls by writing and sharing alongside them in workshops and drawing on their own expertise to facilitate and develop activities.

Our Program

Somos Escritoras is a space in which the voices, experiences, literacies and ways of knowing of Latinx girls are central. At workshops, girls work alongside each other to craft writing and create artwork that examines and critiques the many ways to express and define themselves. Workshops take place during the summer, with additional meetings throughout the school year.
