Scholar Stories: Abi Diaz

How do you use writing or art in your life?

Writing is a way for me to process my emotions and make sense of the stories in my life that shape my growth as a woman

What lessons/teachings from your family, home and/or community do you draw on in your teaching and/or scholarship?

Working together and learning from each other is the best way to maximize our potential as humans to improve our community and our world.

What would you tell your younger self?

You’re enough. You’re Mexican enough. You’re American enough. What you contribute to others and how hard you work says a lot about your character and upbringing, so don’t allow others to make you question your worth.

Advice for new scholars and/or teachers:

Be patient with yourself and give yourself the grace to reflect and grow.

Something else you want to share?

I’m so proud to be a Latina in a mainstream classroom and serve as an example of a different voice and face in education.
