How do you use writing or art in your life?
I use writing to imagine possibilities and create new worlds alongside communities that I admire and cherish. Writing has always helped me make sense of whatever I’m experiencing. When I write, I process ideas and make plans for the future.
What lessons/teachings from your family, home and/or community do you draw on in your teaching and/or scholarship?
When my family and I first immigrated to the US, my gramps would go visit each of his grandkids on a daily basis to help us with our homework. He taught me to write in English through his patience and love, and that’s the same patience and love that I try to bring to my classrooms and collaborations.
What would you tell your younger self?
I would tell my younger self to keep following your heart and trying to do good in the world—vale la pena.
Advice for new scholars and/or teachers: Love your students and your work; do not love institutions.
Something else you want to share?
I’m grateful to Tracey Flores and her #chicasfuertes for always bringing us together through love and compassion.
