Scholar Stories: Dra. Michelle Salazar Pérez

How do you use writing or art in your life?

Writing has been healing for me in many ways—and a vehicle to raise critical consciousness, and to transform inequities and injustice for minoritized peoples.

What lessons/teachings from your family, home and/or community do you draw on in your teaching and/or scholarship?

The first time I read critical theory, I thought, my mom has been teaching me all of this my entire life! Together, and with our familia and community, we learned how to navigate structural and every day oppressions, and to think in terms of the collective. This has guided how I approach my teaching and scholarship.

What would you tell your younger self?

Be confident in what you have learned from your family and community experiences. They will guide you in significant ways that can’t be learned from main/whitestreamed education and scholarship.

Advice for new scholars and/or teachers:

Have many mentors and means for support, be caring, loving, and kind to yourself, and find strength in collective empowerment.
