How do you use writing or art in your life?
I am very big on self-reflection during the morning and at night. Writing in the morning allows setting intentions for the day. At the end of the day, I look back at those intentions and it allows me to either celebrate or alter actions/mindsets for tomorrow.
What lessons/teachings from your family, home and/or community do you draw on in your teaching and/or scholarship?
I draw a lot from what my mother and father taught me about making connections with others. They modeled at home and in my community how they would get to know others by showing understanding and compassion. It is something that I carried into my classroom as I build relationships with my students.
What would you tell your younger self?
Never be intimidated by others and assume that you are not worthy. You bring something to the table.
Advice for new scholars and/or teachers:
Don’t assume that because you share the student’s background you share their lived experiences.
