Scholar Stories: Lorena Germán

How do you use writing or art in your life?

I write in so many ways. I use social media to build and nourish community. I use poetry to let my heart speak and say the things that I need my loves to hear. I write articles and am working on a book, to try and bring all of what I just said together.

What lessons/teachings from your family, home and/or community do you draw on in your teaching and/or scholarship.

Unlike what many of teachers saw, I draw on the strength of the women in my family. I draw on the wisdom of the abuelos and abuelas. I keep the fire for learning and reading they gifted me with and try to pass it on to my own children and students.

What would you tell your younger self??

You are smart. You have good ideas. It will all be better. Follow your heart more. Keep being strong because your chance to vulnerable is on its way. You’ll be proud of yourself later because of all the work you’re doing now. Sigue pa’lante.

Advice for new scholars and/or teachers Draw on the wisdom from your elder teachers that centers students and is justice oriented.

Build on the work that your young colleagues are doing if it’s for the betterment of our society. Don’t waste your time on impressing others. Do right by students and their parents.
